A recent trip to Brighton proved not only a well needed little vacation but inspirational too! For one of my current projects I'am working on:designing a set of book covers for 'Rough Guides to'. England being one of them obviously.
Brighton had such a welcoming and nostalgic feel to it, its 'englishness' was certainly there to see. With its beautiful sea side and 'happy holiday' attitude this buzzing place gave me some much needed ideas for my book cover visuals.
Whilst happily scanning the shelves of WHS, an abundance of the usual design magazines, another one caught my eye: 'Jamie Magazine'. Oh yes, Mr Jamie Oliver has now published his own lifestyle publication. Flicking through its pages, the array of beautiful imagery, food illustrations and scenic photography, not to mention its simple but tastefully designed page layouts and use of type, I was captivated. I had to buy it.... Oh such a joy to read.
What a lovely surprise! Whilst sorting out my room I stumbled across an old sketch book from my GAP year, back in 2006 before I started at Uni.This sketchbook holds alot of memories..
Here are some fine examples of 'Self Promotion' from various design agencies including one called 'Shufti' who are Leeds based. I love the tactile quality of their pieces, the paper is so lovely to handle and overall, this large format folded publication is just captivating. I adore the inventive use of type, image and textures, they unify as one to create such beautiful visuals.
On my lunch break, as I wandered down Leeds high street, I was taken by surprise...the Harvey Nichols window display were just AMAZING and so ORIGINAL! Below are some pages from Vogues current edition, i love the vibrant use of colour in both of these examples, and the imaginative hand drawn typography is just striking.
Morgan Agency had an extensive book collection, along with many design publications too....brilliant! Great sources of inspiration.
Whilst flicking through a copy of 'Design Week' I came across some great work, i absolutely love the simplicity of this poster for this 'Orang Utang Welfare' campaign, the composition is so clever and effective. I also love the visuals showing large scale objects (eg.a roll of masking tape and scissors to mention just a few)they appear out of context which makes them ever more striking and engaging.
Hello! Well its been another fun and productive day at Morgan. Today i continued to work on developing my ideas for the intro web page, experimenting with visuals and the Morgan logo. I created various collages using samples of Morgans recent work, which i cut into geometric shapes. I also tried using paper to cut out type, cutting out the words, 'years of creativity' adding letter stamps to compliment the composition. This worked quite well how ever the light levels weren't as good as the previous day so the visuals look quite cold. This afternoon, the designers took a look at my ideas, they really liked my visuals and gave me some direction and other possible outcomes. Oh...I also read a great book, '100 habits of a successful Graphic Designer, full of such valuable advice thats for sure.
Today, I spent the first couple of hours finishing off the photoshop work for Pennine Socks, now the images are ready to be processed by Paul, the web designer. It will be good to see the images put into context and part of a functional website. This afternoon I started working up my ideas for Morgans'new website holding page. They have asked my design this page:to come up with a visual that portrays their personality and work. Its also their 5 year anniversary this year, this seems a good aspect to focus on, so many creative ways to take this theme. I began by taking some photographs, using relevant and suggestive objects to imply the message and tone that I am aiming to achieve. I started by taking the office' lovely wooden floor, perfect in colour and texture for an interesting background.
The team at work, Paul and Si the designers are currently working on a campaign for Dr Oertker food company, designing promotional material and point of sale designs. It was interesting to see how the client and the designers communicate, they contact one another frequently, updating on their progress, sometimes changes are made therefore the designer-unfortunately, has too re-work their designs to suit the clients specifications.

They thrive on being innovative and creative, working across a wide range of applications including corporate and product identity, direct mail, packaging and new/rich media. Working collaboratively with their clients to achieve solutions that are appropriate and engaging. With their fresh approach and enthusiastic team they have worked for a variety of high profile clients from No 7 makeup, Boots Botanics range, to BT. They have grown and flourished over the past years, expanding the team and recently moving to new premises and soon they're nearing their 5 year anniversary. I am undertaking a week of work experience this Easter holidays, and being my first ever work placement I am looking forward to seeing 'Design' being put into practice, working with professionals and gaining invaluable knowledge 'first hand'. I will keep you updated....
Im a twenty three year old, enthusiastic, creative individual. I love to express my personality, thoughts and experiences through image making. I adore submersing myself into my sketchbooks, documenting anything and everything using mixed media, drawing, and type in a illustrative style.I strive to create both a visual and emotional unfolding through the use of textures, photography, collage and found objects. When working on personal projects I love to experiment and let my work develop naturally and evolve. I adore working by hand, handling materials and 'making' is my thing, especially designing and binding hand made books. However, i find the restraints of a set brief more challenging and push my ideas as a designer, working to set requirements and to an achievable outcome. I am highly self motivated and enjoy working independently, although working collaboratively as part of a design team can be more fun, ambitious and definitely a greater beneficial learning experience. Sharing and bouncing ideas of others when working as a team is invigorating and allows creativity to accelerate. I love the prospect of a challenge and always put in 100% with enthusiasm and a smile! x
